His Timing is Perfect

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Rebecca Livermore As the German pastor shared his vision for a time of reconciliation between Germans and Jews in the Olympic Stadium in West Berlin, I could barely contain myself. What he planned to do was unprecedented, and my sense was that God was clearly in it. When he gave the Macedonian call to Come over and help us, it was all I could do to keep from being catapulted from my seat! I wanted to say, Yes! Ill come! After the service I made a beeline toward this pastor. When I got home from church, I read and reread information he gave me; the more I read, the more excited I became. I could just picture myself in the Olympic Stadium, worshipping and proclaiming Jesus together with people from every nation. An incredible thing began to take place in my life, something I had never experienced before; I began to truly intercede for this pastor, for his family, and for the planned event. I prayed like I had never prayed before, often waking up in the middle of the night, with an overwhelming compulsion to pray. God impressed Scriptures on my heart to pray for the pastor, the church, and the people in Berlin. I just knew that God had something special for me in Berlin! Unfortunately, I was a single, 19-year-old girl, without the resources (namely money) to make a trip to Berlin. But that didnt worry me. God was so clearly in me going, that surely He was going to make a way. After all, with God all things are possible, right? But when it came close to the time of the rally, and I still didnt have anything more than a dream, I had to accept the reality that it wasnt going to happen. My dream had died. I took this to the Lord in prayer. I didnt question His goodness or love for me, but I couldnt understand why He gave me such a passion to go to Berlin and then slammed the door in my face. I found the answer in the pages of Scripture. Romans 1:8- 13 was Gods specific, clear, unmistakable answer to the question of my heart. It reads, First, I think my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. For God is my witness, who I serve with my spirit in the gospel of His Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers, making request if, by some means, now at last I may find a way in the will of God to come to you. For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established that is, that I may be encouraged together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. Now I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that I often planned to come to you (but was hindered until now), that I might have some fruit among you also, just as among the other Gentiles. Those words were written by Paul, but they could have been written by me! How I prayed for these people! How I wanted to find a way in the will of God to come to them! How I longed to see them! And just like Paul, I had been hindered from going. When I read the words, That I may impart to you some spiritual gift I sensed the Lord speaking to me, Rebecca, there will come a time when you will go to Berlin, but if you go now, you will be going with nothing to impart to the people there. You will go in the future, and when you do, you will be going with something to impart. That was my answer, and I gladly embraced it. I kept praying for the people of Berlin and for this local church pastor. God regularly impressed Scriptures on my heart for him, and I began writing them down and mailing them to him. In my letters, I didnt tell him anything about my passion for the people of Germany, or of my unfulfilled desire to go to Berlin. My letters were totally focused on his ministry, and what I felt God was prompting me to pray for him. Rather than dissipating, my passion and burden for Germany increased, so much so that I decided to take some German language courses. In passing, I mentioned this in one of my letters to the pastor. He wrote back, If you want to learn German, the best way is for you to come here. If youd like to do that, I can arrange for you to stay with a woman in my congregation. Wow! This time the money was in the bank, and Id have a free place to stay. How exciting! So, about a year after my initial desire to go to Berlin, I found myself on a plane, headed to Europe. Amazingly enough, I had forgotten all about the passage of Scripture in Romans and Gods promise to me, but God had not forgotten. He was faithful to do what He had promised. Shortly after I buckled my safety belt on the plane, the passage in Romans came back to me. I prayed, Oh Lord, you said I would go with something to impart, but what do I have to impart to the people of Berlin? I have nothing! I know nothing! I have no speaking engagements, and no one even knows of my desire to minister. The pastor just thinks I want to learn German. God, is this a mistake? Mistake or no, there was nothing I could do about it; the plane had taken off and I was on my way to Berlin. A few days after my arrival, Sunday rolled around, so of course we went to church. By German standards, the church was huge, with approximately 1000 people. From across the sanctuary, I noticed a woman staring at me. This continued off and on throughout the service. I had no idea who she was, but I was determined to talk to her after the service. But when the service ended, the woman I was staying with introduced me to people around us, and by the time that finished, the mystery woman had disappeared. Later that week, I was invited to go to the church to help with mailing out a magazine the church produced. Shortly after arrival at the church, I ran into the mystery woman who had been staring at me during church. Come to find out, she was the childrens education director at the church which was exactly what I did in my church in California. After chatting for awhile, she asked me if I would like to go to a teachers training meeting that night. I agreed to go. After the meeting, she asked me if I would be willing to speak at another training meeting two weeks later. The next week, the pastor came to have coffee with me and the woman I was staying with. I told him about my plans to speak, and he asked, Who will interpret for you? When I replied, Gertraud will interpret for me, he said, Oh, let me interpret for you. I agreed, even though I was a bit intimidated by him; he was known internationally, and I was just a 20-year old girl who until then had never even been away from home, much less out of the country. This was my first time working with an interpreter, but he had done it many times and was very good at it. It was as if he knew what I was going to say before I even opened my mouth. More significant, was an incredible awareness that God was with me as I spoke, and that He was truly using me as a vessel to impart His truth to the people there. It went very well, to the point that afterwards the pastor said, Would you be willing to share this same thing with the entire congregation? Things took off from there, and I spent the rest of the summer involved in various aspects of ministry in the church in Berlin. After I returned to the States, I continued to stay in touch with the church, and the next summer God brought expansion to my ministry by opening the doors for me to speak in churches in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and France. My plan was to go to a huge rally, and sit in a crowd, with thousands of other people, as a spectator, more than a participant. That would have no doubt been exciting, but Gods plan was better. My desire was to sit in a stadium, but His desire was for me to minister everywhere from a huge cathedral in a big city, to a quiet retreat center in the Swiss Alps. His vision was much bigger than mine ever could have been. Doors of opportunity opened for me as I waited on the Lord for His timing and direction. 2006 by Rebecca Livermore, a Christian speaker and writer from Denver, Colorado. Gentle Showers

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Colleen Dougherty Imagine lying down in a cozy, dimly lit room. Soft music is playing in the background and warm water massages you like rain falling from above. Sound heavenly? Oh, it is. It also happens to be very beneficial. This luxurious water treatment is detoxifying, hydrating, and intensely relaxing. It affects both the skin and the muscles. It calms the lungs, heart, stomach, and endocrine system by stimulating nerve reflexes on the spinal cord. The Vichy shower, which originated in Vichy, France, is a form of hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy is the therapeutic use of hot and /or cold water to alleviate pain, relieve stress, and to achieve a state of comfort, relaxation, and refreshment. During your Vichy shower treatment the therapist will adjust and alternate massage jets over your entire body. The Vichy shower is a 6 headed rain bar that can be adjusted to provide light pressure (for a soothing, tingling, sedating effect) or stronger pressure (for relieving tension in your problem areas). Your therapist will decide with you beforehand whether you should have a hot, cold, or contrast shower. The hot water is to relax tense muscles and muscle spasms, increase blood flow to the tissues, and relieve pain. It also initiates a good nights sleep. The cold shower is used to reduce inflammation and to invigorate the body and mind. Some treatments involve alternating between hot and cold water to relieve congestion and headaches as well as to promote circulation. Switching from a hot shower to a cold shower for just 30 seconds sends an immediate rush of blood through your system, which speeds up the bodys healing process and gives you a burst of energy. A Vichy shower treatment is especially beneficial for people with sports injuries, arthritis, neck and back pain, fatigue, and tense muscles. We can combine a Vichy shower with any spa treatment. I personally recommend a Vichy Shower followed by a Full Body Massage for maximum benefit. Colleen Dougherty graduated from the New York Institute of Massage in 1997. How to Judge Chinese Suzhou Embroidery

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Susan Yip Chinese Suzhou embroidery is a traditional art which has a high requirement on hand skills. A piece of good Suzhou embroidery is a perfect combination of techniques and art, the quality of effect in the artwork becomes a criteria in judging Suzhou Embroidery. Normally we can tell from the following criteria. 1. To judge the concept of the whole picture, in present market, most of the concepts of pictures are similar, so we can tell creative embroidery form ordinary ones. 2. The fineness of the needlework: it plays the most important role in a picture. It should be very clear where the thread should be thick and where it should be thin, and they should hide the thread head and knot as well. In order to make very fine embroidery, the thread must be divided into thinner ones. Splitting the silk thread is one of the traditional techniques of Chinese Suzhou embroidery, that means to divide the thread into several strands. Like half or a quarter of the original thickness, or even thinner. If you want to embroider the tail of golden fish, you should use very thin silk strands to express a sense of lightness and transparency. The silk strand used for the body of a fish should be thicker, giving people a sense of weight. If you want to embroider a stone, or a tree trunk, you must use thick thread, and a more random pattern. And for the stitching of a cat, a color change must be used for its fur, then the finished fur of the cat will be as vivid as real cat fur. The last key point is that the needlework should be dense. The low quality embroidery is just printing the base picture, then matching it with several threads with similar color, and it will give people the impression of embroidery if you stand far away from the picture. But if you look at it carefully, you will find the pattern in the back.( Since the picture is printed, and after a period of time, the color of the ink will fade, it doesn’t last long.) This kind of embroidery is fake. An embroidery with high art value also has the base picture, but no matter how you check the picture, you will never find it on the base. The base picture has been covered by silk thread.( Good embroidery is usually made by hand. The procedure of Mechanical Graphing and manual graphing is different . Mechanical Graphing Computer jets the picture, then fixes it in the supporting frame. And because silk is quite flexible, it is easy to be deformed when fixed into the frame. But manual embroidery is different , it is fixed into a drawing frame first, then they embroider it. So its impossible to deform. The high value embroidery does not only need the embroidering technique, but also they need the craftsmen knowledge of painting. Because there is no base picture , only a profile of the picture, for color they need the talent of the craftsman. So a good piece of Chinese Suzhou embroidery is not only imitation, but also includes the talent of the craftsman. The disordered stitching embroidery has a special requirements on the thickness of thread, but also thread angle is critical. To use the color of the thread to show the bright and dark sides of the picture, they need the crafts man to have a deep understanding of the application of color. 3. The process of the artwork’s color and art effect. That means the brightness and color should match well, and transition naturally. Such as an embroidered cat, the most difficult part is the pair of eyes. The craftsman needs more than twenty different colors to transition from one color to another, making the eyes alive and vivid. An embroidery with high value should have a beautiful pattern, fine needlework, elegant colors, and deep meaning. Wooden Garden Benches

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Jennifer Bailey Garden benches are nowadays an accessory that practically all gardens have. There are garden benches of various materials available like metal garden benches, plastic garden benches and wooden garden benches. The wooden garden benches are available in various types of wood, like sheesam, bamboo, oak, teak, pine and other types of wood. Whatever the type of wood used for the garden bench, if the bench is made of tropical wood like teak and mahogany, make sure to ask if the wood used for the bench is plantation grown. This is because wood harvested from endangered rain forests cause a great environmental impact due to its usage. Plantation grown woods are raised specially for the use of furniture, and exert less of an environmental impact. Heirloom benches are available, and are found in various styles of varying designs, finishes, colors and shapes. The main difference that can be seen here is in the shape of the back, arms and legs. There are basically two types of benches available, the benches that have backs and the backless benches. Whatever the type of wooden bench you venture to buy, make sure to check out the construction before buying it. This is because; there is a basic rule in garden benches that say that the fewer screws and bolts that are used in the construction of the bench, the better the quality of the bench. Instead of screws and bolts, you should see mostly mortise and tenon joinery in the benches. Check out the wood too; because pine doesnt last long outdoors. The better choices for garden benches are cedar, redwood or cypress, with teak being the best and most expensive of the lot! Choosing the best wooden garden bench is up to you and your requirements. Buy one keeping your requirements and budget in mind, and youll have a furniture piece worth investing in! Find Your Noble Ancestors!

Friday, September 21st, 2007

By Jan-Olov Von Wowern Are you interested in genealogy and family search? Would youlike to find out if you belong to an ancient noble family? 3years ago I started doing serious research about my family, and came all the way back to the founder of our family whowas made a Marquis in the year 1141. In the process I havecollected more than 2000 pages of documentation and madefriends all over the world! In this brief article I wouldlike to tell you about some of the most important things to remember when you are looking for possible noble ancestors. First of all, you need to collect and systematize theknowledge you already have. This means to search writtenmaterial already available, interviewing family members andrelatives, trying to find physical items relating to yourfamily history and if possible summon a family meeting. Second, you need to start using the Internet as agenealogical tool. You need to learn how to use searchengines and telephone directories to do genealogicalresearch. You will also need to find and use specializedInternet sites that deal with noble genealogy and nobiliaryissues such as heraldry (the science that studies armorialbearings). In many cases you can find sites specialized inthe nobility of specific countries, and they will provideyou with lots of valuable information. You will also want to search libraries for books related toyour family search, and from many libraries you can buyphotocopies from the books you need. In some cases you willwant to own a specific book related to your family history, and you will need to search antiquarian book shops. Several Internet sites have specialized in heraldry, and atone site you can search among the coat of arms of more than130,000 families. But if you are serious about finding out if you belong to anancient noble family you must know what to look for. Carb Blockers

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Danna Schneider Carb Blockers and a Little Carb Counting - A Winning Combination in that Battle of the Bulge Have you heard of these almost-too-good-to-be-true supplements called “carb blockers” that supposedly block carbohydrates from turning into refined sugars and entering the blood stream as facilitators of higher blood sugar (which results in subsequent weight gain)? If you have done any research at any time to lose a few pounds and were perhaps looking for a weightloss supplement to help you achieve that, you’ve probably run across at least a few of these products. I’m sure you wondered, could they work? Or are they just another diet rip off, preying on the hopes and dreams of people who want to lose weight so desperately they’ll try anything? The reason there is so much skepticism about diet products such as this, is that they usually are advertised as the “easy way to lose weight”. This, to me, says I will not have to try as hard. I can eat whatever I want and a magic pill will miraculously melt the pounds off effortlessly. The diet products that claim you won’t have to exercise are the ones that really irk me. This is a dangerous message to send. Exercise is essential to anyone’s overall health and well being. Products that prey on people’s hopes of achieving weightloss while eating anything they want should simply be avoided. Claims such as this simply are not true. There will always be a level of effort required by the person trying to lose the weight. That’s not to say that carb blockers don’t work. On the contrary, there is actually one on the market that has a patented ingredient that has been proven to reduce the effects of excessive carb intake, and this supplement has definitely proven to be an asset to many who are trying to lose weight and happen to over indulge once in a while. While carb blockers should not be used as an excuse to constantly pig out on unhealthy refined carbs like white breads, pastas, and sweets, they certainly have been demonstrated (at least one carb blocker has, in clinical studies) to help to “absorb” the shock caused by excessive carb intake. Here’s how a carb blocker works: A good carb blocker is designed to help naturally block carbohydrates from complete utilization and entry into the bloodstream as glycemic sugars, control carb cravings, boost energy levels and block the “bad” fats from complete absorption. Carb blockers usually are taken at a given time before meals. The idea behind the timing is to help stop the meal from completely being utlized by your body as excess carbs, and to help prevent that excess intake from being converted into fat, or extra pounds. “Phase 2″ is the only clinically studied and proven carb blocker today, so make sure you choose a carb blocking supplement that contains this ingredient. I do have to say, the best part about carb blockers is that they do not contain stimulants such as ma huang, ephedra or other stimulants. What’s so Good About Carb Blockers Not Containing Any Stimulants? First of all, diet products loaded with stimulants only stave off hunger for as long as you use them, then when you taper off, you gain your appetite back - many times twofold - and many times you also gain your weight back twofold. Second, stimulants in diet supplements many times can make you feel edgy, nervous and irritable. Sure, the over-stimulation may make you temporarily forget about your appetite, but who cares if you gain more weight back when you discontinue the product? Third, the effects of many dietary stimulants still have not been thoroughly studied and documented. They could have serious health implications if taken for extended periods of time. This is precisely the reason that one common diet stimulant, ephedra was taken off the market. The Bottom Line on Carb Blockers If you want to successfully block carbs in your dieting and weight control routine, a good carb blocker can be of great benefit, especially for those times when you are inevitably going to over-do it on the carbohydrate intake. Just be sure you choose one that has been proven through clinical studies, not just double blind placebo studies, which are often not as accurate nor as thorough and documented as clinical studies. Effects of a Beauty Culture

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Jason Gesham In her essay Cosmetic surgery: Paying for your beauty, Debra Gimlin concludes that women who undergo plastic surgery help to reproduce some of the worst aspects of the beauty culture, not so much through the act of surgery itself as through their ideological efforts to restore appearance as an indicator of character (Gimlin, 107). I believe that women, who decide upon plastic surgery in order to feel better about themselves, have a stronger character than those who stay unhappy with their appearance, although it is obvious to me that women who do get plastic surgery will most likely fight a constant battle with society. Throughout this paper I will be proving my thesis along with discussing what Gimlin means by the above quote. I will compare Gimlins essay to Lisa Carvers article Surrender the Pink, in terms of whether or not the vagina is also an indicator of character, along with discussing the complicating factors that such a comparison between the types of surgery Gimlin discusses and the types Carver discusses. In Gimlins essay she points out a group of women who seem to believe that their culture is judging their outer appearances. These women responded to the judgment, with plastic surgery. It was clear that the women interviewed by Gimlin all had plastic surgery to correct a perceived flaw, and not to please anyone else. In the quote used in the before paragraph, Gimlin seems to be critical, not of the women who get plastic surgery, but of our culture that emphasizes what a beautiful person is. I believe what Gimlin means by appearance as an indicator of character (107) is that this is what she believes women use to judge themselves. Instead of looking at their values and beliefs, they think that others focus on their appearance above and before their character. She is saying that women who give in to plastic surgery to correct a self perceived abnormality are allowing our society to judge them based on super models on magazine covers or billboards. These women are forgetting that appearance is not an indicator of character, but that their character might be questioned after undergoing plastic surgery. Gimlin states, Simply put, if plastic surgery were a successful method for constructing identity, these women would argue that the surgically altered body rather than body work that has proved unsuccessful at shaping the body or establishing the self serves to symbolize identity (Gimlin, 106). This quote is very similar to the above quote. It is easier for women to connect their identity to a surgically altered body, than a body, which will not look how they want it to, no matter how much work they put into it. Although in the quote, I am also given the feeling that women who have had plastic surgery still cannot completely connect their identity to their new body. I believe that women need to learn to love themselves on the inside, before they change their outside. If they do not love themselves before the surgery, chances are they will not feel complete after the surgery. Women want to feel that they can identify themselves as being beautiful, and by turning to plastic surgery after much hard work has not paid off, they can feel better about themselves. Carvers essay focuses exclusively on vaginal cosmetic surgery, and how women feel about their own genitals. My vagina is like an emotion something other can see and judge, but that I cant really look at clearly (Carver, 1). I believe that female genitals are a more sensitive subject to most women that other parts of the body. What Carver is saying is that women have insecurities about almost every part of their bodies, but when it comes to their vagina the fears are much bigger. This is because the vagina is not seen everyday, only you get to choose who can look at it and every women wants to feel normal. Since these women do not know what normal is, except from what they have seen in Playboy, many women feel insecure about their genitals. In Gimlins essay the women tried to make it clear that they didnt necessarily feel judged by others about their appearance flaw, but they judged themselves in Carvers essay it is made clear that womens genitals are being judged both by themselves and by others. Carver says, Do some people go around saying these things about vaginas? (I checked in with my male friend afterwards, and discovered that indeed, terms like roast beef sandwich or the hanging garden are used by certain men to describe long lips) (Carver, 2). I do not believe that the vagina is an indicator of character, just as I do not believe that other body parts are indicators of character, but it is easy to see from the quote above, why women might be insecure about their genitals, when some men make rude comments about them. A persons character does not come from any body part, it comes from their inner feelings, emotions, and beliefs. Since Carver described her vagina as an emotion, one might argue that it does stand for character. But to me, Carver means that women have definite emotions around their vaginas, and if they look normal in societies standards. In one of Gimlins interviews that she documented in her essay, a woman named Ann Marie says that just because she turned to plastic surgery, it does not mean she is a bad and/or vain person. To her, she did not want her personal character to be judged upon her decision to get plastic surgery. In her case she worked hard to keep her body looking young, and when the skin on her face would not tighten, but the rest of her body looked as good as it did thirty years before, she got a facelift. This made her feel better about her outer appearance. When you compare this case to a case of vaginal plastic surgery in Carvers essay, the women seem to have similar views on what is a good reason to undergo plastic surgery. In and interview Carver had with a woman who had vaginal plastic surgery the woman said, I felt droopy and funny looking, one mother of two told me. No one complained, but I was inhibited. Now I feel fabulous! I look like a playboy centerfold (Carver, 2). No matter what kind of plastic surgery is being done, women seem to make it clear, in both readings, that plastic surgery makes them feel better about themselves and that is whats important. Gimlin states, Second, plastic surgery requires a defense. Much like the women I studied in the aerobic classes, those who underwent plastic surgery are working hard to justify themselves (Gimlin, 107). Because of this quote, I believe that women, who make choices in order to feel better about themselves, have a stronger inner character and will, than women who stay miserable with their appearances. In both Ann Maries case and the mother of twos case, these women have gotten rid of their beliefs that they do not look as good as other with plastic surgery, but they both have to defend there solution of plastic surgery. To me, women who feel it necessary to get plastic surgery just cannot win in society. Either they dont feel their appearance is suitable for their culture, or they have to defend their character when trying to do something about their appearance. There are a couple important factors that can complicate the comparison between the types of surgery Gimlin discusses and the types of surgery Carver discusses. The main and most obvious factor is that the surgeries described by Gimlin, were to improve the appearance of women, but they were surgeries that can be see by any person, any time. The women in Gimlins essay care more about how they look, to themselves and others, when they are fully clothed. In Carvers article, these women had surgery to make a private part of their bodies look better. It is clear that these women are more concerned with how they look to a certain, specific person or a set of people. In each of these readings the women were striving to change something about themselves that they think is abnormal, but the difference is that the surgeries discussed in Gimlins essay are more common and noticeable than the surgeries in Carvers article. Another factor that was mentioned in Carvers essay, but not Gimlins was the topic of power. Carver says, He (Dr. Matlock) shines a bright, hot light between your legs and offers you power over a part of yourself you dont understand. We could by harnessing his laserscopy machine, control our vaginas. Thats the snake oil hes offering. In the hour and a half I spent with him, he never mentioned men. It was power he was selling me. Carver brings up the issue of having power over what you want your vagina to look like. Gimlin never mentions having power or playing God. In the cases Gimlin describes, the doctor has the right to pick and chose his patients. If he does not think that they should receive the surgery, he can deny them of that. In Carvers article, each of the doctors she visited were trying to sell her the surgery. She mentioned that when looking at the before and after pictures the before pictures looked fine to her. The last doctor she had seen took the approach above and beyond by selling her the power of having the choice of what her vagina looks like. I believe that this is an oversight on Gimlins part because she did not find out how other doctors go about choosing their patients. She also made the doctor that she was working with aware that she was writing an article about him and his patients, therefore he was not going to say that he tries to sell his work. Because Carver went undercover for her article, she ended-up getting the more truthful side of plastic surgery. After careful reading and analyzing both of these articles, I can conclude that for some women plastic surgery is the way to go. Gimlin writes, Plastic surgery becomes for them not an act of deception but an attempt to align body with self (Gimlin, 102). There are obviously some pro and cons to plastic surgery, as there are with many other large decisions women make in their lives. But in my opinion, if getting the surgery help the woman gain confidence without losing her character and beliefs, then more power to her.
